Substantial Story
A friend posted the query on Facebook, “What opens your heart?” My response was “another open heart.” One of my favorite things is listening to stories. From Garrison Keillor to a friend’s blog (Dave Day’s amazing life) to after-dinner chats … Continue reading

Golden Revolution
Egypt is Poland. In both cases change came from within, and the change came from a disgruntled populace, not from an opposition political party. After Poland changed, everything in the USSR changed. With Egypt and Tunisia changing, what other countries … Continue reading

Not a Pro
I am not a professional. I might have professional ethics and attitudes, but those are from my days as an engineer and from my upbringing. As for investing, I am an amateur, experienced, but an amateur. The only way I … Continue reading
A Mac is Not a Toy
“Have fun with your new toy.” I haven’t heard that at Christmas in a long time. I’ve heard it a lot this last week though because I just bought a new MacBook. A nearby mall on the mainland has a … Continue reading
Coffeehouse Morning
This isn’t my father’s coffeehouse. It isn’t even one of Howard Schultz’s. I sit and type in Island Coffeehouse, ” . . . a non-profit community-driven, youth-powered business and community “living room”. Which happens to be filled with grey haired … Continue reading
